There is a popular trend out on the internet right now of people using job search engines to hopefully cover the entire internet in one fell swoop, does it work?
Well, the job search engines will absolutely return you a lot of results very quickly but what you’re really looking for are quality results. It’s not that getting back 11,000 results from a search is a bad thing but in some cases most of the results are pure junk and who has time to send out 11,000 resumes anyway.
What you’re really looking for is a way to return quality results that will lead to a successful interview and then of course getting hired. Having to weed through thousands of results in some cases where most of them were already filled 3 to 6 months ago can get rather frustrating to say the least.
Hey, we know jobs are not easy to come by these days and in fact it can be downright hard to get a really good employment opportunity to stare you in the face. So, if you do choose to use one of the many job search engines be sure to get a test result before you plunk down your card. Why get a test result? For one really good reason and that is…
Be sure they have really up to date filters for you to be able to filter your results with. Check to see if they have really tight and very current date filters. The way you use them is to keep filtering by date of submission until you get the ones that the companies doing the hiring just filed within the last 60 days.
Why 60 days, aren’t those really old job postings? Aren’t the job search engines supposed to have really current data?
Yes, they usually do. However some of your best results will be by getting away from the crowd and all that competition. Let me explain. When a new job posting comes up on a job search engine the company is instantly bombarded (it is the internet) with thousands upon thousands of applications and resumes. Most of the time they will fill the position from that 1st wave of response, yes that is true. But the competition in that 1st wave is ferocious and you had better be all that and a bag of chips if you even think you’re getting called for an interview (we will show you a trick to make you stand out in a link below)
So, now how about that 60 days? Well, many companies don’t fill the position and still more hired someone who turned out to be terrible at the job and they are thinking of replacing them. Most of the companies don’t want to have to resort to using a job search engine again because the last time was such a pain. Then, as if by magic poof here comes your resume with a killer cover letter that tells them what benefits they will get by hiring you. They like your style, they call you for the interview and viola you’re hired.
One thing, in this market place I can surely tell you is if your resume and cover letter are not 100% top shelf you better get on that right away.
If you want to be one of the thousands they see pouring in from the job search engines your resume and even more importantly your cover letter had better be written like a sales letter that espouses your benefits. Your benefits are what are you going to give them over and above your unbelievable competition? You have to let them know right up front, but there’s a right way to do it and a wrong way.
